The American actor has officially confirmed that he will play the role of Albus Dumbledore in the HBO Harry Potter series.
The HBO Harry Potter series has received its first official actor – the legendary Albus Dumbledore will be played by 79-year-old John Lithgow. The actor confirmed this information in an interview with ScreenRant a week after the news of his possible participation.
The actor admitted that the decision was not easy for him, because working on the series will take up a lot of time at this stage of his career.
“It came as a complete surprise to me. I just got a call from the Sundance Film Festival and was invited to do another film, and it was a difficult decision, because I’m afraid it will define the last chapter of my life for me. But I’m very excited,” Lithgow shared.
Previously, the legendary Hogwarts director was played in the film franchise by the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.
It is not yet known who will play the main characters – Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. In the fall of 2024, the series team announced a large-scale casting among children aged 9-11.
The filming of the series will begin in the summer of 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK. The project will have seven seasons – each dedicated to one of the books by Joan Rowling. The premiere of the first season is scheduled for late 2026 – early 2027.
Earlier it was reported that HBO announced a children’s casting for the new Harry Potter series.
